Sunday September 28: Perry Lake ORV Work Day!

Pull up a couch. It's cool in the Lounge. Just remember to be a good neighbor.

Sunday September 28: Perry Lake ORV Work Day!

Post by troy »

We got rained out this past Spring, but we have a new date!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

In coordination with National Public Lands Day...
In cooperation with local off-road organizations...
In cooperation with the US Army Corps of Engineers...

The Perry Lake ORV Work Day!
Sunday September 28
http://perrylake.org/

What will we be doing?
  • Trimming branches off the trail
  • Weed-whacking around the perimeter fence line
  • Erosion control
  • Constructing a safer creek crossing using a conduit and gravel

So bring your gas-powered edger, chainsaw, shovel, and leather gloves. (Or just you!) Work day kicks off at 9 AM. When the work wraps up, we'll play on the trails to enjoy the fruits of our labor!

Download the Volunteer Form
Not only will we benefit directly from an improved riding area, the local Corps office gets credit for every volunteer hour worked. This is why we need you to complete the Volunteer Form. We'll have copies at the work day, but save time by downloading and filling out the form ahead of time.

I'm in... and probably a few buddies too.
2 of us went to Perry yesterday, and it's in desperate need of some clean-up. Still had fun though, there was mud if you wanted to find it, but no problem crossing the creeks at all.
There's some massive trees that were blown down in storms this summer that won't be possible to move, but lots of 2-3 inch branches blocking trails and sticking out into the trails that can smack your leg.

I plan on being there with my chainsaw, three weed eaters and a Polaris Ranger in my enclosed trailer. The Ranger has a winch on the front that will drag some pretty big logs out of the way if necessary. If something is too heavy to pull, the winch just drags the Ranger up for a closer look! We shouldn't need the trailer to escape the bitter cold wind like at the School Creek clean up day, but it still makes a nice, comfy place to take long, relaxing union breaks.
I hope a lot more than 3 people from RideForum will show up for this...let's get some commitment Guys!! This is an excellent way for us to make a positive impact and help keep our riding areas OPEN. (Plus, if you haven't met him already, no matter where you go in the world you can say "Yes, I know Troy Wolf!"

Hey, guys! Normally I'm more vocal and active in promoting this stuff, but I've been really swamped at work and home (mostly 1st World Problem!) I'll be there ready to work. Our brothers over at MoKan Riders are stepping up with a small army ready to come help. I know many of the RideForum.NET community enjoy Perry from time to time, so I hope we can get a strong contingent out there. Of course I also recognize that many will have important obligations that prevent them with being part of this work day. 8)

What is the target start time.
Make postive choices by eliminating negative options
Not to decide is to decide
Success is not what you accomplish but what you overcome

http://perrylake.org/ says we'll be starting about 9am, but folks can show up earlier or later. I suppose the more folks show up ready to work by 9 makes the group communication and organization easier, but no worries.

If I'm back in town at a reasonable time on Saturday I plan to attend this...may not rise and shine on Sunday early enough to be there at 9, but will do my best.

I was very happy with the turnout and the progress we made, and I think Reece with the Corps was pleased as well. He mentioned the idea of making this an annual event and he even talked to a place that would sponsor us with pizza lunch. Next time, we'll shoot for doing this when it's much colder out for several reasons.

1. Don't overheat while working
2. Less growth to deal with while working on the trees.
3. Less chance of ticking off recreational users who show up unaware the area is closed for the day.

Some folks showed up and rode anyway, which really wasn't a problem. Kudos to the 2 guys who showed up to ride and instead got to work helping with the trail cleanup.

Kudos to Reece and his crew from the Corps. He really supported this effort and they provided 5 chainsaws, 2 pole saws, and some other gear. They brought their skid steer to repair the huge washout in the driveway. Thanks to ajayhawkfan for loaning me his ATV again so I could easily carry chainsaws and tools. THANKS to all you guys who came out and worked! It was a worthwhile day for sure! 8)
