Sat 7/9: KC to Manhattan

Post by troy »

The title has a dual meaning.

1. My brother, KC, is moving from Wichita to Manhattan. (actually Kechi to Westmoreland)
2. I'm riding from KC, the metro, to Manhattan to help him unload the move.

I'm heading out from the S part of Overland Park on the F800 early Sat morning taking a non-Interstate route up to Westmoreland, KS (NE of Manhattan) to help my brother unload his stuff. I plan to get there late morning--perhaps 11:00. The route will include some gravel, but mostly non-interstate slab.

Gagnou plans to be in the Manhattan area this weekend, so at some point, I'll hook up with him as well. Not sure if he'll have time to ride, but he seems to think his KTM 950 is a better machine than my F800, so some test riding may be in order.

I plan to spend Sat night at my brother's place. On Sun morning, there are 3 of us that may go for a little dualsport ride in the Manhattan area. I figure I'll head back towards the metro on Sun afternoon--again staying off the Interstate.

So it's not much of a real plan, and if you tag along, I can't guarantee anything...but...it's always an adventure of some sort!

Do you think I could meet you in Manhattan just to help unload?

Very funny, Eddie.

The unloading part of this deal probably will not last more than 2 hours. I HOPE it would be obvious that anyone going along is not obligated to help unload my brother's stuff! Ride out with me, make your own way back...or catch back up with me later.

I'm now considering making a longer loop home that goes up North to White Cloud and then down to the metro along the river to check out some of the flooding.

You all are lucky I'm even making the invite. Most folks would kill for the opportunity to ride with The Wolf. I'm that good.

I'm game, I was planning to get out this weekend to find some good low maintenance roads. I sent a e-mail to local riders to see who else might be interested.

Mac & Savage (and others), what are the non-paved roads like N of Manhattan with the recent rain? On this trip, I want to avoid gumbo. I'll play it flexible of course and just change up the route as I go.

Do you Manhattan area guys have a ride plan for Sat or Sun? My plan is flexible, but here are the knowns:

I'll leave the KC metro by 6:30 AM Sat morning. I'll hit some cafe along the way for coffee and eggs as I meander my way up to Westmoreland. My route is mostly back slab, but I've got some gravel (dirt?) in there, too. If it's too messy, I'll route around.

I expect to be busy helping KC (Kyle) unload until at least noon and perhaps longer. Then for the rest of the day, my plans are kind of up in the air, but I do plan to stay at Kyle's place Sat night. Sometime on Sat afternoon, I want to hook up with Luc for a visit.

Sun morning will have me leaving Westmoreland as I meander up to Joe's (xr-nut) place for a visit and lunch outside Sabetha, KS. From there, I'll ride E to White Cloud and take in some views of the flooding as I make my way back to the metro staying on the KS side of the river.

Anyone wanting to ride along for any part of the journey are welcome. I'm ready to ride!

Most of the roads will be fine with this heat.
I doubt I'll be able to ride much Sunday. I'll be doing family things and trying to stay cool.
I just thought I'd cruise up to Westy Sat and say Hey. Is he moving in town or in the country?

If you go straight W of Westy on Bigelow rd you can almost get air at the intersection of Sales rd. Sales rd N of there is a decent road.

I'll get some photos and a video posted soon, but a quick report to say I had a great weekend! It was a real GUY weekend, and I have photos to prove it all.
  • Motorcycle riding
  • Fishing
  • Shooting
  • Extreme 4x4 rock crawling (one big rock)
  • Lots of grilled meat
Big thanks to KLRed for riding out to Manhattan with me. It was great to meet you, and I look forward to riding with you again. He got off work at midnight, met me at 6:30 AM, rode to Manhattan, ate lunch, and rode home straight to work for his 4:00PM shift!

I got to meet Savage and rode with him a little--thanks for showing me that great road (race track) down to the marina!

I got to spend a little time with Luc (gagnou) on his property NW of Manhattan. Always great to see Luc!

Did some fishing at Kyle's new place on Sat evening. I think everyone who threw a pole in caught a fish.

Sat morning, Kyle & Matt joined me for a minimum maintenance road ride. WOW! Kyle lives in the middle of the best mm roads in Kansas. The hills up there are beautiful and he has dozens of miles of rugged dirt roads out his back door.

After Kyle & Matt split back for home, I continued NE to Sabetha, KS where I spent a few hours with xr-nut and his wonderful family. Joe showed off his extreme 4x4--an IMPRESSIVE monster! I got to shoot clay pigeons with the shotgun and ring a metal disc at 130 yards with a 22 rifle, 22 pistol, and M4 assault rifle. WOOHOO! (Joe, did I get the numbers and such right?) Thanks for the meal, too. (Burned steaks were rectified by some of Joe's amazing pork--the man knows how to smoke a butt.)

The ride back home found mile upon mile of 2 track roads and dirt min maint--some with minor water crossings. I rode more gravel than pavement until I got about to Basehor at which point I hit K7 and flew home. When I hit the metro, the temp shot up from 98 to 102. Thanks, big city and your damn pavement. I got home about 7PM, took a cold shower, and enjoyed time with my family.

A great weekend!

Holy, I can't believe I missed out on an opportunity to help another family member move. Prior to Saturday's moving of brother KC, I was batting 1.000! Do you have any idea how not helping Kyle move is gonna hurt my average?

Hope everything went well. Does this mean that KC actually sold his house? Or, are they still looking for a buyer.

Thanks... I only went out for less than a 20 mile roundtrip and rode some really good stuff! I am looking forward to getting out and exploring some more soon and riding a lot of good roads I already know about. I won't be settled in up here until the second week of August but look forward to lots of Fall riding later this year.

Troy and I had a good ride to his brothers place, hit some good roads that Troy found and topped it off with a greasy cheeseburger. What is better than that. Thanks for the ride and sharing your experiences with me. It is much appreciated. KLRed (Brian)
