My brother-in-law is coming in town next weekend. Thought it might be a good time for a ride in eastern Wabaunsee county. I'm thinking meet up at Wamego, lunch in Eskridge, and back to Wamego. The route I have hits as many of the low maintenance roads as possible. The route I have from Wamego is a round trip of 80 miles. Might gives us enough time to cleanup Box Turtle enough to make it more passable. Keeping this one short due to the temps. Also take a little more time to enjoy the scenery.
There's a slight chance of rain, and the temps are supposed to be a little lower. Any moisture will help hold down dust.
Let's meet at the convenience store on Hwy. 24 at Wamego at 9 am.

Pretty casual event. Probably not a good experience for a large DS bike or inexperienced rider. I haven't scouted the roads so the difficulty can be pretty variable.
With all the spring rain, I would expect deep dried out 4X4 ruts, and bad erosion cuts. Sometimes almost worst when it's this dry. Some of the roads will have tall grass (unless it's been mowed), that hide all kinds of nastys.

Yes, there's a gas station and a greasy spoon downtown for lunch.

I will be in Illinois or I might have checked out your rain ruts and hidden nasty gotchas.
That sounds like Perry right now. I was out there Sun afternoon. 100+ temps. There were 3 other guys there. I rode for about an hour and was cooked. When I got back to the truck the others were gone. Must have taken off to mow their lawns. The trails were overgrown in some places and washed out from the recent heavy rains. I got caught by deep ruts and hidden logs a couple of times but managed to save it.
Since it is going to cool down today to about 101 I will be out there at 3. Anyone else up for a hot lap or two around Perry's trails, so to speak? Troy?

Eskridge was in the ADV KC photo tag thread recently, cool old bank and the vintage bread billboard on the side of the grocery store is really cool!MacWildcat wrote:Yes, there's a gas station and a greasy spoon downtown for lunch.

Re: Wabaunsee county August 14th
Had a good ride Saturday. Had a total of seven riders for the day. Started out with some soggy roads south of Wamego. After slogging our way through the first low maintenance section, I circumvented the rest of the planned low maintenance sections between Wamego and Alma.
After a quick front tire fix we were on our way towards Eskeridge. There seemed to be less rain in this area from the storms Friday. We made our way over to Dawson creek road (Box Turtle). Three of us risked life and limb and rode through the whole section.

After a lunch break in Eskridge to grab some grub and rehydrate, we headed on our way. By 1 pm, it was getting pretty hot and humid, some folks decided to take more direct routes home. Four riders stayed on the original route headed back to Wamego. The four of us covered some really great low maintenance sections that took us back to I-70. The last section was about 3 miles long and leaves you wondering at times if you are actually on course.
We decided to try the low maintenance sections north of I-70 back to Wamego. What a difference a couple hours can make. There were a few sloppy spots, but we actually had to contend with dusty conditions. We were back in Wamego by 3 pm, took another break at Sonic before making our way back to Manhattan. Total of 134 miles for the day
Have to do this again later this summer. Maybe we can ride further east sometime. I have heard some good things about areas north and south of Topeka. I haven't ridden this area very much but the terrain looks interesting.
P.S. Finally had electricity at 4:30 this morning.

That was a fun ride as I haven't done much backroads stuff the last few years. The Eskridge/Alma area is full of good low/(NO) maintenance stuff and the elevation changes makes it more fun. I think you could ride sun-up to sundown out there and still not cover them all. The 450 was alot of fun to ride on that terrain too. Let's do it again when it cools down some.
