I purchased an 06 Husky TE 250 this summer for my daughter to ride. It's a very fun and capable bike! Anyhow the guy I purchased it from had never titled the bike and only had an MSO from the dealer. He only used the bike for off road. I wanted him to get a title so it wouldn't be a hassle back in KS getting it tagged and titled. We wrote up a bill of sale and I withheld $350 that I would send to him after I received the title. After many weeks of not hearing from him I tried calling and emailing him but got no response. I was afraid my dual sport would have to be a dirt bike for the rest of it's life. I was traveling to MO this summer and decided to pay the guy a visit. I left notes on his door that I wanted to hear back from him and that must have got his attention because he finally called me and explained that the taxes, fees, and fines where over the $350 I withheld. I said that I wanted the MSO and a power of attorney for titleing the bike and would try that route. I figured with an MSO, power of attorney, and bill of sale I should be able to get it titled somehow, even if that ment paying the sales tax on his purchase price.
Well I've never had an easy hassle free experience with KS DMV so I was prepared to have to explain the situation and probably jump a few extra hoops to get this done. I've never lived anywhere that made it so difficult to give them my money when it comes to vehicle titleing. Well while explaining my situation I was cut off and told, "The previous owner couldn't sell you a bike he never held a title to." I reminded her I have a power of attorney and she shot back with, "All you can do with that is title it in his name. Why would you want to do that?" I said I don't want to title it in his name I want to title it in mine to which another wall was thrown up as she told me, "Then you will have to get him to sign the title to you or get another power of attorney. Why do you want to pay his tax and then yours?"
I just left because I was getting nowhere and being treated like crap. I was polite the whole time trying to ask questions that would lead to a solution.
Well just a few weeks ago I traveled to MN and brought the bikes along for some riding. I also took all my paperwork along and decided to try the MN DMV. While staying with my Sister way up in the North woods I asked what the DMV office was like there. She and her husband said they were great to work with. The next day I took my paperwork there, it was a shared space with a flower and gift shop, I asked if it would be a problem that I lived in KS and had a KS license. The guy said no problem. He only briefly looked at my paperwork, FILLED OUT MY TITLE APPLICATION for me, handed me my plate, and I handed him $260. No hassel, no problems, just smiles. I left in disbelief at the differences in the two DMV experiences. In addition it was cheaper than paying him the agreed $350 for the title and then paying again when I tagged it in KS.

Slim, how's the TE 250 ride? Has any mods been done to it? I would strongly suggest the JD Jetting kit. I hope your daughter/you like it and welcome to the Husqvarna family, we are small but growing.

I moved to a leaner main jet and moved the needle clip up a bit. It's not spot on yet but pretty good. It's got good power for a beginner and if you rev it you can get power that feels equal to the DRZ. Handles the rough stuff really well, just a good all around bike so far. My only concern is durability of the engine. It seems to smoke more than I'd like but I'm watching it and the oil level close.

WOW! I'd think it would be a no go simply because you don't live there or even have a drivers license for the state. Why would they allow you to title a vehicle there? Oh yeah--you are GIVING THEM MONEY!slimtrader wrote:...I asked if it would be a problem that I lived in KS and had a KS license. The guy said no problem. Like you, I keep wondering why Kansas does not want our money. I also wonder WHO and/or WHAT are they "protecting" by rejecting all these title requests?! WHO is protected when Joe Smith is not allowed to title his perfectly street-capable (lights and all) motorcycle? A better question is WHAT law is upheld in denying these requests?
I'm really glad you got that deal done, Mike! On another note....how is your knee doing?

First off they wouldn't title it because the previous owner had not applied for a title, not because they were disputing that it was street legal. Kind of different from our past discussions about title problems. I also told the MN DMV that our family owns property here, (we do in a trust for the family farm) and that I may just leave it up here to ride when I come visit, (I didn't).troy wrote:WOW! On my knee, I was very careful not to aggravate the injury and make it worse. I rehabed it slowly, instead of running I swam and biked when it was ready just to stay in shape . I was doing some light running after about 6 weeks and slowly increased it after that. Long story short. I was able to do the triathlon on July 27th and got 43rd overall out of 220 participants. I was really happy with that. I was about middle of the pack for swim and bike times but managed to pull 13th fastest run time in the 3.3mile run. Just this weekend I ran in the Mulvane old settlers road race and got 1st for my age in the mile with a 5:39 and 2nd for my age in the 4 mile with I think a 28:30ish time. I don't know what I placed overall. They send those results to us in the mail. No pain, no problems, feel good. I guess I can safely say I dodged a bullet on the injury with no lingering problems. I was really worried when it happened and thought I would have permanent problems with it.

That is probably the key to how you got it titled in MN.slimtrader wrote:I also told the MN DMV that our family owns property here, (we do in a trust for the family farm) and that I may just leave it up here to ride when I come visit, (I didn't).
KS law is a bit off ... you license / title a motor boat where it is stored (as of Jan 1 for KS purposes) ... so if your boat is at Lake of the Ozarks on Jan 1, KS assumes you are licensing & titling it in MO. Motorcycles, and other motor vehicles, are licensed where the owner resides or has a place of business. Take a look at the fine print on your vehicle registration, just above/below your signature. So if I left a motorcycle at a friend's down in Wichita, I would still be required to license it in Johnson County (Overland Park). Go figure.
Technically, your farm is probably a place of business, so no foul. Or at least arguably a place of business.

I don't get it. It's a bit ch to get an almost legal bike legal here. But you can build up a bike or buggy from scratch and get a builders title and put it on the street?
Ahhh, pre-mix!!

I was told by a highway patrol inspector that, "We do not want dirt bikes on the roads in Kansas." I do not know who set that policy but it is being enforced at both the state and county level. I had to go to extremes to get tags for an '04 LC4 SXC, a LEGAL '07 KTM 525 EXC and finally really had to persist to get a tag for my '09 KTM 300 XC-W 2-stroke (which has all the required items on it thanks to Sicass Racing).
Why do they not want tax revenues for the years of ownership? It goes to school districts, all of which need funds. Why do they not want the sales tax and licensing fees for the counties? They are all crying broke.
