Eureka Springs Hillbilly Dual Sport Tour, March 28-29, 2008

Post by david h »

The Eureka Springs, Arkansas, Hillbilly Dual Sport Tour will be held this coming year on March 28 & 29, 2008. We will be staying at the Travelers Inn in Eureka Springs, same as last year. Call 1 800 643 5566 to book a room. Rooms will be $42, plus tax, breakfast is included. Most rooms have two queen beds. This ride is not sponsored by any group, it is just a place for like-minded people to meet up for some fun. I don’t make a penny off this ride and just do it for grins. You need to plan your own tours to match your level of ability. We will have a few maps and routes available for GPS, but again you are on your own as to what you should do or not do. You will be able to join a group with riding skills and desires such as yours if you want . Over the last five years we have only had a couple of people have minor spills and we want to keep it that way. More info to follow such as possible routes, points of interest, places to eat lunch, blah blah blah. This ride is not a dirt bike ride! You will need to do at least 60 miles of asphalt. You must be street legal. Knobs or 50-50 tires are a plus. Last year we had almost 70 riders and 65-70 degrees for the highs---------- Who knows what we might have this year?

Practice up on your yodeling and hillbilly slang, David H

Is this thread where things can or will be communicated for this ride, or is there somewhere else I need to pay attention to?
Thanks

Carl, anything you will need to know will be posted here or I will tell you where else to look, on this site. http://www.rideok.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=964 is a place that is a little more active at this point. The ride is quite a ways out so more input will come soon. book your room and lets have some fun, see you there on Thursday

Me and Fred Mays are in. Made the room reservations this morning. I will be heading down Thursday, but unsure at what time right now. I will post up a time when we get closer in case anyone wants to share the ride down.

Looks good! Here are a couple URLs that people can use to download the file:

Garmin Format (GDB)
http://www.rideforum.net/gps/Arkansas/eureka_08.gdb

Generic XML format (GPX)
http://www.rideforum.net/gps/Arkansas/eureka_08.gpx

FYI, for some people, when they click the links in the browser, it may bring up the file directly in the browser--which looks like gobbledy-gook. So add a note for people to Right-Click and choose Save As to download the Garmin file. There are 5 routes so left click to highlight one and it will be easier to see them apart

Thanks! to Troy for the links, David h

Just wondering if anybody from the KC area is going to the DS ride at Eureka Springs, AR Mar. 28-29?
I'm heading down on there on the 27th and looking forward to the ride Fri and Sat. Hope to see some of you there.

Correct. I have made reservations but there is a good chance I will be forced (literally) to work.

I have a little extra incentive for folks to be a group leader. You're not eating dust all day! I led a group last year and had a ball. As the front person, you also see more wildlife. I'm looking forward to leading a group of a maximum of 5 persons. Last year, our Buffalo group was closer to 8 folks and it did slow things down. On the 2nd day, we had five in a group and it seemed like the ideal size. The smaller groups spend less time regrouping and starting back up after a break is a lot faster. With a large group, the last riders barely get a break before the group takes off again.
I'm re-entering the routes split in two parts for those of us still using obsolete GPS units. My old Garmin Etrex is limited to 150 waypoints per route, so I have to split each day into two parts. If anyone else needs the split route file, send me a PM.
Hoping to get some saddle time in this weekend if the temps reach at least mid-40s. Thought I might be on a new (to me) bike by ride time, but I missed the TE610 by one day. Darn! 2003 Husky TE610 w/ 1500 miles, barely broke in. Sold for $3500. Now I have the fever for a new bike

Last year we had a really nice fellow join us from Idaho. He showed late enough that he didn't get signed in on my ride sheet before we left. He was riding a Yamaha WR426 (Idaho has their act together, allowing these bikes to be tagged). I didn't know if he got his name and number down on another list - David did he sign-in on any sheets you have?
I was hoping to give him a call in case he hasn't found our website yet. This guy was a snowbird who just happened to drive by and see all the DS bikes. He rushed back to his home on wheels, unloaded the WR426, and joined us both days.

Larry, I don't have any info for you about the rider you speak of. I got most of the names, but not where they were from.

So far 30+ rooms are booked so looks like a big group again. My wife informed me that she isn't coming with me this year so I'm looking for a roomie to help with costs. Ultra loud snorers need not apply  . I also have room for 1or 2 on my trailer, otherwise I'll just haul the Klx 400 in the back of my truck.

Later, david h

Hi folks, just found this site by way of a cross-post to Adventure Rider.

I'm interested in the ride, although I'm looking for a chance to road-test some camping gear in prep for a Moab trip.

Anyone camping? Any sites recommmended?

Most people stay at the motel. Beaver Lake is a few miles away and I think they have camping. More camping could be done at the Withrow Springs state park 20 miles south of Eureka. It is a very nice park. I would think if you get to the motel and ask they could tell you about places to camp.

See you there, David

smoothrider, you can park at the motel for the day. Be sure to get here by 7 am or so. ride starts at 7:30 to 8 and you will need to sign in, and get with a group that rides like you want to ride. we split into different groups to try to make everyone happy.

see you there, David H
