Thinking about shopping for a KTM.
Thinking about shopping for a KTM.
I am considering looking for a 640E or a 625SXC. Anybody know of any. Also would be open to any comments on either or both. Been reading lots of stuff on ADV rider. Thought about a Husqvarna 610 but that would double the initial cost as near as I can tell. Might "settle" for a DR650 if price is right.

Re: Thinking about shopping for a KTM.
Good luck with the search.
1. With many states cracking down on conversion of dirt bikes to DS bikes,
2. and the relatively small number of plated dirt-oriented DS bikes (Husky 450/510/610, KTM 450/525/640, and DRZ) brought into the US in the first place,
I imagine that fewer people are parting with their license plated DS bikes as not a whole lot is out there to replace them with.
The plated 640s that I have seen recently are going for $3500 - 4500, and perhaps higher, depending on condition. That whole supply / demand principle.

Re: Thinking about shopping for a KTM.
I have seen a lot of 640s for sale on http://www.cycletrader.com
Unfortunately, most of them are in California, but they have some pretty nice looking ones for the price range Mike quoted. If you haven't been to cycletrader before, the easiest way to search for a bike is to click the "browse" tab on the left column then choose dual-sport and then KTM brand
Sorry: I have drooled on all the good ones already!

Re: Thinking about shopping for a KTM.
Pick up a copy of "Wheels For You" it's a free car/truck/m-cycle/boat/etc for-sale rag you can find all around Topeka. There is an '01 KTM Lc4 640 for sale in there near Salina. I think he wants $3850.00 for it and it had about 8000 miles on it. The big block KTM's are fun to ride, just be aware that they vibrate alot compared to a KLR. I think the 640's are a little smoother than the 620's, at least that's been my experience.

Yep I called about that KTM yesterday. He said it has less miles than what was printed in the Wheels Mag. It looks nice. I thought since it was close and you dont find them in this area, about going and looking at it. Time ran out for the weekend and ended up not going. Maybe Ill get the big street bike out and head up there this comming weekend if he's around.

KTM LC4 beta:
-The 01 and later models have a much better counter balancer. Those before 01 really shake. -The 640 motor makes a lot of noise. Sounds like rocks in the head. That is normal. (BTW, the 400 LC4 makes hardly any noise or vibration but is nearly the same motor.)
-Electric start was added sometime in the late 90s.
-03 got a roller bearing on the shaft under the clutch basket. Before that was a ball bearing. Replace it. Go to KTMTalk for a how to in the sticky thread section under LC4. $100 and peace of mind.
