Ok, latest news and thoughts. The DRZ is gone and I have some funds for another bike. I found a gas-gas web site with used bikes listed and they are really not that expensive used but they are not close by either so I can't just go and look first to see if it's really been taken care of. Not sure I have the time to travel all over to find one and not going to order a new one from a dealer either. They seem to make a lot of 250 enduro bikes. http://www.gasgas.com/forsale_enduro.htm

I also have a bid on ebay for an 06 525 KTM exc. Looks like a great deal on a low hours/miles bike plated in tulsa but doesn't have the light kit or or a couple of other things I'd want for off road. It was mostly ridden as a motard and he put the dirt wheels back on and listed the bike separate from the motard wheel set. I'm still on the fence weather I hope to get it or not. I'm not sure the 525 would be right for me and that still leaves Erin on a big 450. I guess if I end up with it I still have the option of looking for something else and selling the bike I want to keep the least.

Anyhow, everyone has been helpful with ideas but you are probably getting sick of my rambleings.

Quick question, I have heard KTM doesn't label the title as "off road only" on thier bikes. Does this mean if I find a used KTM that isn't currently plated I could possibly plate it in KS? Would a dealer selling a used bike have a better chance of plating it for me than if I purchased used from a private seller? I know this subject has been covered before but not this exact situation. I'm not sure anyone has ever come up with a concrete answer either but Safari came close to making the muddy water a little clearer. I am assuming that I'd have a better chance if I purchased in state and didn't have to have an inspection first.

I do not believe the dealer will be of any assistance with getting a street-legal tag. Nothing they can do to help. (My opinion and understanding of the situation.)

A brand new bike has a MUCH better chance because brand new does not require inspection. It is the inspection that causes the most hassle. I've also heard that the KTM "origin of sale" document stated OFF ROAD ONLY at the very bottom and you could just carefully slice that off and then the tag office would not see that tidbit. Anyone know if this is still true?

Heck, my Husky IS "50-state street legal" from the factory and yet the local inspection office refused me. I had to hassle them for a week before they finally just gave up and gave me my inspection--obviously very unwillingly. There must be a lot of people committing crimes on "dirt bikes" or something--not sure what the resistance is about. I even got the famous "it has a high fender" therefore "it must be a dirt-bike" therefore "it is not street legal". Huh?!

In KS, out of state requires an inspection, and that makes things difficult. I think safiri's advice would be same as mine--go find the most backwoods, small town inspection office you can. You want an inspector who is likely to have an ATV at home. A "like-minded" fellow. You are required to tag in your own county, but the inspection can be from anywhere in KS.

There is not a concrete answer "YES" or "NO" to getting a formerly off-road bike tagged. It really all depends on who you see at the inspection and tag office. The laws really are in your favor, but unfortunately, that does not matter unless you are really willing to take this thing to court.

You better wait and get an 07 or 08 EXC...they are street legal (50 state). Of course they are the same bike as the 06...but they have the right paperwork.

The 400 I sold Mike was 100% legit. Illinois street title with tag and current registration. States are SUPPOSED to recognize another states title transfer...but tell that to your bureaucrats in KS. Ironically, you can build a deathtrap out of scrap metal...strap on a lawnmower motor and get a tag...yeah, that makes sense. Mike did prevail...but any normal hhuman woul dhave given up...he did not.

I believe you are setting yourself for a tough row to hoe with that 06 KTM.

Oops...forgot this.

A bike I can highly rec is the little Husky 250 fourstroke that is street legal. Since 2006 or 2007? Daryl will know. Those are awesome woods bikes and are a blast to ride.

If it comes to it I'll just plate it in Oklahoma, I have in-laws there.

Husky street-legalness started 2006 I think. Fuel-injection started 2008. I wish I could have test ridden the 250 compared to the 450. I've had those who supposedly know better tell me I'd have been happier with the 250. Don't get me wrong, the 450 gives me some huge grins!

Hmmm...the government wants to make it harder to street-legalize these motorcycles and they want to eliminate places to ride them off-road. Hmmm...sounds like the MAN is out to get me. Seriously, though, it's not hard to imagine a United States in 10 years where these off-road machines are literally out-lawed. Enjoy them now, tagged or otherwise. :)

What he said, except for the tag office. The county appraisers don't care, they just take the MVE-1 and your money and give you a tag and send the paperwork to Topeka so that you can get a title. The MVE-1 is required for any vehicle brought into KS with an out of state title. The MVE-1 is supposed to [by state statute] only check VIN and odometer. The KHP takes this a lot further, without legal justification.
