MY RIDING SEASON IS OVER!! :-(

Well, on the 1st of october on my way home from the grocery store i high-sided the new g450x bmw. it was totaly my fault, and i might not have been surprised by anyone else doing it but I should have known better. anyhow- damage to the bike was minimal: bars, upper triple clamp(maybe) left peg, clutch lever and some scuffs on the plastic. thats all fixable. damage to me: worst -left wrist fracture(scaphiod bone) in cast for now. left hip/upper thigh is VERY bruised and incrediably sore. left elbow scuffed(no breaks!) left lower leg/ankle scuffed. head-NONE!(arai XD ruined).

all in all i got off easy, doc says 3-4 months minimum in the cast. i am seeing a surgeon next week to determine if we can pin the bone with the idea of a shorter recovery. i hope so, i cant afford to be off work that long!! below is a couple pics of my cast, my boys are quite the artists!! i hope to remind everyone that these things are huge fun, BUT can also hurt us! just ride smart, and always at your limits-no where that is. ATGATT, wouldve saved my hide. my helmet saved my head.

Bummer! Care to go into details on how it happened?

Taken from wikipedia:

A highsider or highside is a type of motorcycle accident which is caused by a rear wheel gaining traction when it is not facing in the direction of travel. For a highsider to take place, the rear wheel must first lose traction and drift out of the line travel of the motorcycle. The initial traction loss may be caused by a rear locked wheel due to excessive braking or by applying too much throttle when exiting a corner.

When the slipping rear tire suddenly regains traction it is not moving in the same plane as the rest of the bike. This causes the motorcycle to straighten up so quickly the rider is almost always thrown off, even at low speed.

Highside accidents are typically caused by over-acceleration or braking in corners, but are also a result of locking the rear brake in an emergency stop while traveling straight at high speeds, such as on a highway. Chopper style motorcycles with the front brakes removed are especially prone to highsider accidents.

My case is underlined. Stupid off-road tires!

Sorry to hear it man! At least you're not in a wheelchair. Eat your fruit flavored Tums for calcium.

Hey Big Red, you gotta be careful with those German bikes. I guess you won't be makin' it to the season finale at C'dale then. Get well quick.....

DUDE :!: :!:  That really sucks. I hope the bone pinning works out so you can heal quickly...and completely.
On a brighter note, I don't feel so bad for "just dropping" your brand new Beamer in the woods now.

hey guys thanks for the words of encouragement! :D went to docs today with hopes of the speedier option involving surgery and pins. he said no. he said the break is too clean and it needs to heal on its own. that means 3-4 months in a cast and no working. i guess its time to settle into a long winter!! the only good news(besides all the obvious-im alive things!) is that i wont be able to drive the brown bus during peak  besides the really nice paychecks, i must admit it will be nice to not have those 12 hour days!!!

hey hayden, you said i couldnt use red text anymore, the blues for you!!!

kc-you are off the hook and that, but you still get credit for the first scratches!!!

Sorry to hear about your crash, man that sucks! Were you able to ride home or was this a 911 call? This should make us all remember to wear all the gear all the time and get some short term disability insurance  Wishing you a speedy recovery and remember to get off the couch at least twice a day :P

MAN! i havent even thought about gettn' the ol PS2 out, though your right it would be hard to run the left side controls!!! So far the wife has kept me busy(easy guys, i mean chores around here!) so there really hasnt been to much sittin' around. The doc on wedns had the gall to tell me that in 3-4 months my left wrist is going to be weak and that if i sat around on the couch the rest of me would be too, yeah rite!! i had a small table project that had been put aside before we moved here, almost 4 years ago. ive recently gotten my woodworking eq on line out in the shop so this week, with her help, we finished the table. its a mission style solid red oak end table. trees grown rite here in kansas, milled just down the road.

It was NOT a 911 call, i did NOT want to be a motorcycle accident statistic! I road it home and went in the next day. luckily for me our union has short term dis. and while its not much, it is better than nothing at all. plus they keep my healthcare bene's going for the family, since while im off un-paid, ups does not. I have my ebay gig still and our empl is quitting next week so we will not hire for that until i go back to brown. i can collect that check too.

on another note, bmw called yesterday and they have the parts that got broken, so im headin' up there tomorrow. it looks like i bent a bolt on the handle bar clamps and not the triple clamp itself. thats alot cheaper! anyone need a ktm 520 cheap, $1500? it would make a great trail bike.................

UPDATE: well, i saw the doc last wedn and he told me that i am a "rare human being"(as my wife mumbles "yeah right" over in the corner!) and that the break has healed much quicker than usual and i wont be out the full 3 months! currently i am without a cast and wearing a splint for two weeks after which i should get cleared for PT! So it looks like i could be back to work around the 1st of december!!! yeah, just in time for peak!!! oh well, its time, im about broke!!

on another note, you guys that live one hour from topeka should be ashamed of youreselves!! you missed an epic day of racing last sunday. BOK was a blast, even from the sideline. National level pro riders tearing it up on three formats, cant get any better. pics are on my smugmug page if interested.

That race was fun, even though I finished next to last in the TT-flat-track. The 4T's have a little advantage on that. Once I got my technique down, I did pass a CR450 on the last lap and sneered at him as I went by. I had my sights set on Clausen and then the checkered came out.

Maybe you'll be in shape for the C-Dale team race next weekend. Maybe the Turkey run at Jeeps. Certainly should be ready for the 6 hour St. Valentines Day Massacre at Jeeps in Wichita. You need to do the Massacre one time in your life. You could team up with your son. The memories will last a lifetime.

hey tf, as much as id love to ride before the year is up, i think i better stay off until spring. i want this thing healed up 101% so im good to go. if its not quite healed and i fall it could easily go again, and i really dont want to be in a cast any longer!!! im setting my sights on the april ride in arkansas, getting needed gear, prepping the bike, etc. I have added stabil to all my rides and everyone is in the heated shop for the winter. i may try to come down to c-dale for moral support! jr
