Decent DRZ mechanic?

My drz is seeping some oil and I'm not sure what all needs to be done to get it to stop. I would really like to get it done sometime. It's needing an oil change but I don't know if I should change it before I try to get the leak fixed.
Anyone want to help me out?
Thank you!!!

Have you located the leak? I'd try to track down the source of the leak first to give everyone more information. I could be as simple as tightening a drain plug or filter cover. Take the skid plate off and wash it down real good with engine degreaser or carb cleaner then run it to see where it leaks.

I've cleaned it up thoroughly a few times. It's kind of hard to see but it seems like it's leaking behind the starter. Like maybe the bottom gasket where the head bolts to the engine block. I don't have the confidence the tear into a nice engine to replace a gasket though. Might have another slight leak around the kick start seal.
I have a REAL hard time taking any of my vehicles/bikes to a shop to let any mechanic work on my stuff, so I'd rather it be done where I can keep an eye on it and learn at the same time.
ugh :?

Yeah, that sounds difficult. I don't know if I'd tear into it either without more experience or help. Maybe if you had a shop manual that detailed the process you'd feel more confident tackling it. Is it so bad that you couldn't just add a little oil once in a while? Not the best solution but maybe workable until it gets worse.

A guy told me Amsoil has a way of finding any little leak it can. After doing my 1st oil change this weekend I believe it. Very very thin oil. I think after winter I'll go with a full ester in a heavier wt and see if it stops seaping then. :)

DR 650'S ARE KNOWN TO LEAK AROUND THE BASE GASKET IN FRONT,REAR AND ALL POINTS IN BETWEEN. MY 650 IS LEAKING AND THIS WINTER WILL GET A TEAR DOWN. I PLAN TO REPLACE THE PISTON RINGS AND CAM CHAIN. IF THE VALVES NEED ATTENTION THEY WILL GET NEW SEALS AND LAPPED IN. IT IS AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR ON A 4 STROKE.
