May 16, 17 and 18, 2008
My wife is having family visit May 15 to 18 so I'm getting a weekend pass to do (almost) anything I want. I want go riding. I hope to leave around 1:00 PM on Friday and need to be back by late afternoon on Sunday the 18th.
I'm thinking of riding the Gypsum Hills (Red Hills) near Medicine Lodge, KS. However, most of you have ridden in a lot more places then I have so I though I would ask you. If you had a weekend where would you go? It does not have to be in KS or MO. I am leaving from KC so keep that in mind.

Eddie, have you ridden in the Ozark/St. Francis National Forest? If not, oh my gosh are you in for a treat. On the highway, the area around Cass, AR is only 4.5 hours from here. On your big, comfortable BMW, it would be a nice ride. Once you get down there, just ride any gravel road you see--and it's all gravel except the highways (23, 21, 7, 215). There are lots of geocaches in that area in great locations. So your route is easy--just search for the geocaches and you'll have a great ride!ajayhawkfan wrote:My wife is having family visit May 15 to 18 so I'm getting a weekend pass to do (almost) anything I want. Lots of places to camp in the forest, or stay on top of White Rock in the campground or the stone cabins.

Or enjoy the luxury at the Mulberry Mountain Lodge.

If you decide to go down there, lots of people on the forum can give you ideas and tips.
Oh, and yeah, the Gyp Hills / Ted Turner Buffalo ranch is nice, too.

I have been wanting to go find the "Castle at Coranado Heights."

It's near Lindsborg, which would also be cool.

I have canoed most of the rivers in this are but never road the area. I need to seriously consider this area.troy wrote:Eddie, have you ridden in the Ozark/St. Francis National Forest? I have been to the Castle a few time but never on a bike. I do like that area and I need to explore that area more.JaySoy wrote:I have been wanting to go find the "Castle at Coranado Heights."

Troy, I have been looking at the maps of the area in Arkansas. You may have changed my mind.

The Gyp hills are beautiful, but a long weekend in the Ozark NF is better. Now, before you get any wild ideas, do NOT follow the track logs from the April Fools Dual Sport event ... I don't want to get a call that we need to come down to Cass with a recovery unit to get that monster bike out of trouble! Seriously, there are serious trails down there, but also a lot of gravel roads and fire roads that are very appropriate for "the pig". More than enough for a long weekend.ajayhawkfan wrote:Troy, I have been looking at the maps of the area in Arkansas. You may have changed my mind.
White Rock is a beautiful place to stay. You can tent it or they do have some small cabins for rent. Pretty remote from a store or restaurant, however. But that means you are in the middle of the forest.
Troy and I both have Ozark NF maps ... get ahold of one of us.

I have heard about the trails you have taken. I don't what to have to call anyone to help recover "my pig". I'll even loose your phone number before I go.
I think you and Troy have convinced me to give that area a try.
I still would like additional ideas from others because I hope there will be a lot of future weekends to ride.

Her (a 15 yo hanging out after dark) dad will just reach in the back of his truck and pull out a shotgun.
