What do you suppose is the best way to store a new metal gas tank off a dr650? Tank has no fuel cock since it was used on the IMS plastic tank that replaced it. I figured I would dump a little oil in it and toss it around to coat the surfaces then shut it up in a non heated place( barn). Would a garage shelf be better, non heated , but almost never freezes. Should I leave the fuel cock opening open, or tape it shut ? How about the gas cap?
Inquiring minds want to know, David h
how to store a metal tank ?
Re: how to store a metal tank ?
I would close the petcock opening to keep any critters out. The oil sounds like a good idea. Keeping the cap on and making a little seal for the petcock would keep the oil in and the air interchange to a minimum.
In a dry place I can't imagine rust being a problem with a painted / oil coated tank.
An idea though to really protect it or that might cause more harm: WalMart sells large Zip-lock bags that are meant for storage of clothes (shirts, pants, etc). Put the tank in one of those and throw in some dessicant packs that you get out of every bagged item that comes from China (shoes, computers, etc).
The bag could trap moisture inside, so I would be tempted to just put it up on a shelf NOT in a bag.

Re: how to store a metal tank ?
Safiri's ideas seem sound. My 99 DR350 metal tank came off my bike when I out on an Acerbis plastic larger tank. I didn't even bother dumping the quart of gas that was in the tank and just put it on a shelf in my dry, climate controlled garage. After 2.5 years anyway, it looks like new. I'm really, really, lazy.
