08 race season, who racing?
08 race season, who racing?
Planning on racing the Forward Motion Hare Scrambles this year. I have not been able to race in that series for the last few years. And have decided to go and hit up as many as I can. Anyone else going to be racing this series?

I'm sure thinking about it. On my '05 250 KTM EXC. I have not been out for a couple of years either. Too many mangled joints had to be repaired from, uh, guess what?

Stop by row #7 and say hello. I'll probably do both Milfords, Quenemo, C'dale. The ones close to home. Depends what work will allow. I'm looking for a 50+ partner to run the St. Valentines Day Massacre with on 2.10.08. . Read about it below. How 'bout it Stu. You could let that big 525 eat at Jeeps, maybe even get out of 3rd gear. It's only a Six hour race. I swear there's only three trees on the whole course. Last year there was so much snow and ice on the track that half the people took a practice lap, put there bikes back on the trailer and left before it started. Donnie and I took 1st place in the 50+ class. Actually I think everybody just quit before we did.......

Maybe I'll call XR-nut. It would be a good tune up for the April Fools extravaganza....

I wanted to do the age thing and go into that class, but I figured someone would complain. So, it's off to the vet class. I don't really see how they can call it a C class tho???? Should be fun any how. I'll be at Milford #518, the poop has all ready started sling with two of my old riding buddies that will be with me in the class.Stu wrote; Super Duper Senior Geezer. If my partner doesn't back out I'll be at that race too. How do the classes work - age or speed or both? By the sound of it sounds like a good track for the big bike.Harvey Mushman wrote;

Re: 08 race season, who racing?
I used to race Jeeps. They can set it up so it is tight and good for smaller bikes or open it up. The SVDM was usually more open. I thought about going until I realized it was on a date that I would be out of the state on business. It would have been fun to go down there and race it again. BTW, I have raced Jeeps when it was freezing with lots of snow and ice. It was interesting watching the front runners go over the jumps and then hit frozen "ponds" of ice when landing--back by the NW corner.

Re: 08 race season, who racing?
They do the classes by age. Last year was my 1st year for the Massacre. It was basically a couple of MX courses linked together by a tiny bit of single track. In past years they also linked in the flat track but the conditions were so bad I was told they didn't want to tear it up. It actually was alot of fun until the snow/ice started to thaw, then it was utter carnage. I remember going thru a corner and lost the bike on a big patch of ice. When I slammed to the ground I broke thru the ice and took about a gallon on ice cold water down my back. It wouldn't have been so bad but we were only about an hour into a six hour race. I still find mud inside my truck from that race.....

Re: 08 race season, who racing?
I've lurked around that hare scrambles site and am considering trying one of these races. Sounds like a blast. Problem in the back of my mind is that I have never done anything like this. I have been riding rougher terrain lately down at the ranch so I might be up for it. I ride a KLX400S on dual sport rides and ride a YZ125 at the ranch. I would use the YZ for the race. Maybe I should have some you RACERS down to the ranch...
So what is this Hare Scramble racing all about?

Flag drops, go fast!!!! Check out the Forward Motion Hare Scrambles - local races. Two hour race format + possible extra lap depending on when you go through the check point. You try and get as many laps in as you can before the 2 hour time limit runs out. They have many different class, one to fit just about everyone. It's a good time and good people.

Re: 08 race season, who racing?
If you were going to try a race I'd suggest Carbondale or Milford. Neither have any creek crossings for all practical purposes. Quenemo would be a good starter track as well. Your YZ would be fine, actually your 400S would probably do OK. Barkbusters is a must, a skidplate is a good idea. Drink plenty of water starting a few days before the race and be sure to have a camelback on race day. Just approach it as if you are going for a brisk 2 hour trail ride and you'll have a blast. Lotsa people willing to help and ride just for the fun of it. Even if you only do it once, it will be a fun experience you won't soon forget and it'll make you a better rider.
