1997 KDX220 Stolen out of our barn during between 4/21 and 5/12/2007 Missouri/Kansas area LaCynge KS/ Amsterdam MO. Original purple tank painted black, RB bored out carb, RB head mod. FMF Fatty pipe, stock muffler, Factory Effex graphics and RB Designs stickers on shrouds, black number plate backrounds on side panel, bright green case saver, new Metzeler MC4 Tires, Dirt bag tool bag, tool wrap with bright green painted tool, Fredette rider tool, black Acerbis hand guards. The bright side...
Chances are slim it will be recovered. The bright side is my wife feels so bad that sailing is clear for a replacement. There is a 2004 KDX200 for sale locally. Other options include a Honda or Kawasaki two-stroke and I suppose KTM but not sure if want that high strung of a bike. I also could go with a four-stroke but want to keep it light weight.

If by high strung you mean pipey, dont worry about a KTM being too high strung, if you go for a 250 or 300. The 200 you may need to work a little to smooth it out (gear it up, power valve, jetting etc.) depends on what your budget is, too.
If by high strung you mean needs some teaking / adjusting, I get you there. The KDX was add gas and ride. It just worked, but it was good, not great. The KTM can be great but needs to be adjusted to suit you. I like my 300 except the front suspension want to deflect a little, even after a Letko revalve. I like the motor, but again it needed a new needle and seems to be sensitive to temp changes (I think its because of the shpae of the combusiton chamber on that era of 300). but it has endless torque much more than the 220 of course, and has more on top too which was my complaint with the 220.
i think my next experiement will be a woodsified YZ250. My buddy has a 94 and that thing flat rips and the revalved suspension is actually smoother than the katoom. if he had any balls he could beat me in a drag race too LOL

How about a serious play bike if you catch my drift. I'm probably not a good enough rider to get a serious woods bike. I only go fast in a straight line The riding conditions on our ranch range from open pasture to wooded hills and Last Man Standing stuff at the ends of the strip pits. Short list includes Honda CRF250X, Yamaha WR250F Reno's has a good close out deal on those, Honda and Kawasaki still have two strokes but probably would want a flywheel weight on them to tame them down some.
I like the idea of electric start - I'd like a two stroke... dunno a lot to consider huh.
Maybe I should just get another KDX...

yep, KDX it sounds like. STay away from the CR250 it is real finicky to jet and usually needs 50/50 race gas to keep form pinging. The KX is a beast.
another idea is a yz125 (good deal on closeouts) with a rekluse clutch. more grunt than you think and light as hell. plus goes good in a straight line and the suspension is closer to woods rady than a 250 becuase its meant for lighter riders.

I think it would rock. its the stepp long hill climbs where the low end deficiency would show itself. There the relkuse would aid in maintaining momentum.
It has more power than a KDX, just most is in the mid and upper. The modern 125 are not at all the pipey light switches like the old days. you canputt around on them, just to go really fast be ready to pin it alot. Sounds like fun.

Went out to Reno's today. Bike fits me OK. Only thing I can say without riding it is boy is the seat hard compared to the KDX. How do you think the actually riding experience would be compared to the KDX. A lot less power and torque down low? Another issue didn't think of until I saw the bike is not having a kick stand. Makes it kinda hard to stop when I'm opening and closing gates down at the ranch!

I have an old KDX and it is a great all around woods/ trail bike. But I also have a DRZ250 that I wouldn't trade for woods and trail riding. I have read all the website reports about, how you can't jump with it and it won't win the holeshot. I don't need to do either. I added a skid plate, FMF pipe and handguards. Electric and kick start. Air cooled with oil cooler.
