So I bought my 2008 RM-Z 250 one year ago. Got it from a younger guy who didn't know how many hours were on it when he bought it, so of course he didn't know many hours were on it when I bought it. It started right up and ran decent so I took a chance and bought it.

I've mostly just trail ridden it the past year, but myself and the kids have taken it to a local MX track a few times. I don't know how many hours I've put on it. I would guess about 45-50 hours.

Well after a year I've had enough of these high maintenance MX bikes. So far I've probably changed the oil 4 times, cleaned the air filter 3-4 times, and... uhh, let me think, well I guess that's it, other then to add stuff to make it more trail friendly and to set it up for my height.
Changed over to Rotella, then changed after 5 hours or so to see how dirty it was and look for metal shavings. I changed it a few weeks ago after at least 20 hours and was surprised to see how golden it was. I probably should check the valves this winter... We'll see if that happens.

So far this has been an awesome bike for me! It fits me perfectly! Light enough, mild enough, it doesn't complain when I ride my normal pace (slow), but she is a blast when you open the throttle!
I just hope she doesn't blow up on me now.

I also have a 2010 rm-z 250, previously owned by a family that does a lot of motocross. So, I like you , was nervous, BUT it has been a blast to ride. No issues.

Good to hear. Any idea how many hours on the bike or top end?

Sorry for the delayed resply ( 4 months) . Don't know how many hrs . just got it back from shop. Had them check valves. They said they were loose. That and a slow leak front tire, $180 American dollars. Looking to ride tomorrow. Grain Valley MX is open.

After riding at Birdmans a few weeks and riding slow and working the clutch a lot I thought it would be a good idea to change the oil and filter. Looking back at my notes I saw that it had been 1 year since I changed oil last in it! Crazy! I can't believe I let it go that long, and it's not like I let it sit around that much. Oil wasn't golden, but it really wasn't that bad either. It didn't look like black water.

I thought it was probably a good idea to check the valves again this year. Found out 3 of them were just out of spec. I didn't expect to find that since it was still starting and running great. Removed the valves to see what size shims she had. Long story short, ended up adjusting the valves on the ole RMZ for the first time. And she still starts up and runs great!

If you haven't ever checked your valves or adjusted them, give it a try. It was much easier than I expected!
Next time it will be easier because I know what size shims are installed.
