Spring New Bike Lust

It happens. We rationalize the desire for a new toy, er, bike, with every conceivable scrap of logic ("I'll have a spare for friends to ride." "It will be a different bike for a different kind of riding experience." Etc.) My current KTM 500 EXC is a great bike and as a do-it-all bike the best I have ever slung a leg over. Why would I consider a new bike?
Why would anyone?
Why not?
Soooooo, I will be getting a hold-over '13 KTM 250 XC 2-stroke. It is definitely different. It is a great compromise for both MX and cross country racing. It will be a lot easier to ride in mud than the 500. And I will have a spare for Troy to ride & bounce off of trees.
Does this happen to you? In the spring? Anytime?

Yeah, I was in a BMW shop day before yesterday and stopped to look at the big GS's. I started with the rationalizations:
1. I could keep the old one as a spare.
2. A new bike = reliability.
3. I haven't bought a bike for a while, I deserve one.
I resisted the temptation but have to go to town here in a bit for more parts. I might bring home more than an oil filter.

Stu, You've come full circle. If memory serves me, you were riding a KTM 250 when I met you in September, 2008. Luck was on our side when we ran into you at Perry that day.

Well, Rick, as the Italian novelist Leopardi (Giacomo Taldegardo Francesco di Sales Saverio Pietro Leopardi for the obsessives among us -- and you know who you are, don't you Troy?), said that everything must change so that it can remain the same.

Totally agree. I have been reading stuff for a month about this bike and that bike. Finally pulled the trigger on a 990. I re ally appreciate BMW engels and letko lettting me test drivethe f800gs, ktm990 and the r1200gs. When it came down to it the 990 was it. The 800 was nice and really zippy. But the air was rough on the highway. The r12000gs was a real panzer. Tank. Perfect for round the world. But i am commuter and want excitement. And I like the talllscreen on the 990 and the engine. See you guys there. I would still the pre run but it has gravel. Not on day one.
