Cold Weather Riding

Post by troy »

On my drive into work this morning around 6:30 I was passed by what appeared to be a motorcycle policeman. Could have been a funeral traffic control bike I suppose. License plate looked official, though. It was 14 degrees. It was dark so I'm not sure, but I think he was even wearing one of those 3/4 helmets.

Hmm..... That sounds awful!

I've always wondered about the government's approach to motorcycle police officers. On one hand, they are highly trained and highly skilled riders. On the other hand, they are not required to wear any more than the most basic safety gear (half helmets, fingerless gloves, and whatever those uniforms are made out of, not to mention wearing a full belt with a gun, handcuffs, etc poking out and waiting to be mashed into their bodies on impact) and are usually riding the lowest performance bikes available. I'm still a little surprised that they would allow an officer to ride when it is that cold outside.

Yeah, don't expect the cop to be in a good mood after climbing off his motorcycle half frozen.

On the other hand (pun intended?), maybe his fingers would be so frozen he couldn't physically write the ticket!

Many years ago (15+) I went through a yellow light (I swear!), and got pulled over by a M/C officer on a cold (20ish) day.
He too had an open face helment on. His face was bright red and his nose was running. I remember him not being in a good mood. " It was red" is what I was told and was handed a citation.
