Recently a 2010 KTM 530 EXC found it's way into my garage. The previous owner used it as a commuter (?) and had it jetted way rich. I can only guess that he wanted to avoid the normal warm-up procedure and have a bike that would just start up and go. The carbon build-up around the exhaust is obvious...
My question is...are there any known jetting problems with this bike. My thought is to return to stock jetting and go from there. I will be riding this bike as a dual sport, i.e., more road than trail.
Thanks for your input.....................

I've always had good luck with the JD jet kits. They are a little pricey compared to just buying separate jets and trying them out, but I don't get any satisfaction out of guessing what settings might work better than others. Not to mention removing the carb, or at least the bowl to change things out. If you get the kit and just follow their guide as to which needle and jets to use for whatever conditions you are in, I've found that the bike runs great. Also, when the weather changes or you might be going to higher elevations to ride, you just pull out the kit and the guide and change the jetting and the bike runs like it was intended for those conditions.
I've used the kits on several bikes now and have never had a problem or a feeling that the bike could be running better to this point. On my '05 KTM 625 SMC, the JD kit completely transformed that bike from stock, but it was jetted SUPER lean from the factory.

Exactly what I said when he told me the story at the Pie Ride.kendall_smith wrote:That's kind of like using a machete to butter your toast, but to each his own!phil denk wrote:The previous owner used it as a commuter (?) and had it jetted way rich.
+1 on a JD or Dynojet kit. Follow the instructions and you'll be pretty close. One thing I have learned though............. the actual number on the factory jets, and the number on the jet kit jets DO NOT CORRESPOND. It's a huge pain in the ass, but once you change jets from stock to jets out of a jet kit you have to Stay With the same brand of jet. If you mix and match it will completely screw you up. That could be why the bike is "miss jetted" now.

From my limited experience on a 08 450 excr I would not go stock jetting.
