Anyone riding down south 8/16?

Post by will_kc »

Anyone riding south of KC this coming Sunday?

I'm ready to put a few miles on the bike before the my 6000 mile maintenance tear down.

Hey, Will. I just wanted to let you know that I've got family in town this Sun, but would have enjoyed a spin down South with you. My brother built a min-maint route and explored in Greenwood Co. He found some really cool stuff!

Hey Troy,

Cool pics! Yeah, it would be nice to check out your new wheels and some "real" dirt roads down here.

I'll post some pics, if they're worth posting.....

Ride report !

I ended up riding solo and searching for geocaches. My search took me to Garnett and Cedar Valley Lake. The ATV trails on the south side of the lake were steep, heavily treed, narrow and rocky. At one point it took four tries to make a long climb out of dry creek up a stone/dirt path. I think this spot is Eddie proof ! Backing down for run after run was a bit spooky... :x According to the camping area signs you can ride the "trails" around the lake without any issues (8 A.M. to 10 P.M., permit required for "non-road" vehicles). Once my ram mount for the Kodak C813 camera/cam is in, I'm going back to take some video.

Having a 14 tooth front sprocket would have been a good thing on the trails. My tractor bottomed out quit a bit and my new sliding pegs and MSR bottom plate got a good testing!

Ciao!

What?! Tell me more about this. Is this the small lake SW of Garnett?

Here yah go Troy !

Check out the bottom of this page for the ATV regulations.

I called and we do need a day permit. (I could have been eating a ticket for lunch, lucky me....)

I'd love to try this with a another rider or two. It's not a place I'd want to venture without Safiri's rope along.

Maybe I can talk my wife out of her XT225 for a day..... imagine not riding the KLR....

Thanks, Will! So would you say there are enough trails there to keep a rider happy for a half day of play? I imagine it's a relatively small trail area. $7.50 for a day (7 day pass) is not cheap, but I'd pay it for some fun trail riding.

Garnett is about far enough away to make for a really long and fun dualsport ride from KC, play on trails, come home.

IMHO there is enough fun for 1/2 a day. The parts that I rode were real slow riding, danged spiders and trees everywhere. Not to mention scree limestone all over.

I'd camp it out, bring the fishing poles, dirt machines and tear it up for the weekend. The camp grounds are very clean, mowed to the lake edge, primative camp sites, pull service sites, boat ramp, etc. There is a natural meat farm 1/2 mile from the entrance. People don't know much about Garnett.

I plan on going fishing there and will end up getting a permit (I'm a county resident). If my cam works, I'll post some pics and crash videos.
