Looking to get out this Saturday. Anyone doing anything? Was considering Oakland. A little worried about the conditions, I remember it holding water really well. Anyone been out there lately?
Good weather coming and want to make a good choice.
Looking to travel up to 2 hrs from Lees Summit.

Was out there yesterday on my Klr scouting for places I can take the boys later to learn to ride. Some small mud spots in the shaded trails but the open areas are perfect. Down in the sand the Kansas river is up a little. I think the wet conditions gives it that extra special smell

Here's the facebook page for Oakland

It's pretty new and some pretty active people on there that could give updated conditions.
I was planning on going to Perry on Saturday, do you think it will still be pretty bad in the shade still by then? Did that area get any of the rain from last night?

60's for the rest of the week so sure it will be a lot better. A little mud makes it fun but need something dry to start breaking in the little bikers. Think I will take them to Oakland or may call Santa fe to see how its thawing.

Other than the ground, how is Oakland? Is there a lot of tree overgrowth or has it been maintained much? Thanks

Sounds like Oakland is good. Taking my somewhat beginner son. Anyone else looking to enjoy a great day? Or any other ideas regarding a good location. I live in Lees Summit,

Could always go to Lake Perry, it's probably a bit closer to you also.
I personally like Perry a lot more than Oakland, its a lot bigger too

I didn't make it there, but it is so close to my house I can tell you the conditions are very good to perfect.
That said, I was very bummed when I read the info on the Shawnee Co Riders site this weekend.............
If you look at the aerial photo of the trails the trees hug the river next to the farmers field well East of the entrance road. It turns out all the trails........ that have been there since the 70's.......... East of the entry road are private property. There are no fences or sighs, but It Is Private Property. In an effort to keep the trails open, there is an initiative underway to build a fence designating the Eastern boundary of the riding area.
2/3s of the area is still there, and belongs to the City Of Topeka, but IMHO the trails that will be lost were the best.
There is some single track that follows the ridge right along the Kansas River...... East..... of the entry road that is outstanding.
A rider could probably still ride it today without ruffling any feathers, but soon it will be gone for ever. Please just stay in the woods, and out of the farmers field.
I rode there in 1973, and had some of the best times of my life.

I showed up with about 25 other riders. conditions were great in the woods and real dry in the open area. To bad they are going to shrink it. It would be a good place for those with new riders.
Looking forward to White Rock AR.

As I understand, the area they are trying to educate riders to avoid was never a legal part of the riding area. It's always been a trespassing situation, and a point of contention that threatens the life of the entire riding area.
I have not been staying on top of it, but if they are able to organize a work day to get fencing or signage up, as many as possible need to volunteer to be part of the effort.
