Kinda River Road n more

Post by wayno »

Have not been paying a lot of attention but havent heard of any one riding this for awhile:
Greenboots "Start at the North Lawrence Burger King. Head north through Tonganoxie, Easton and Jarbalo area on the way to Kickapoo. Hit the (rutted? muddy?) River Road to Atchison. Lunch at Paolucci's (113 North 3rd Street; Atchison, Kansas 66002-2836 913-367-6105) around 11:30 AM. Then north to Wathena and the sandy, glacial hills of Doniphan County. Noodle around the Missouri River floodplain, west to White Cloud, go up the overlook platform, see Iowa and Nebraska and Missouri. Then blast south on long straight gravels for an hour to Oscalousa, then twisty, shaded Buck Creek Road south to Lawrence. "

I was up in the Wathena/white cloud area today - confined in a car....look wet enough I wouldn't venture there with at least a semi-knobby tire. The shaded areas still have snow so there will be mucky sections.

My son and I just mounted up the Mitas E-07 on our Stroms and took an 80 mile spin on them afterwards with varying terrain. If you are not familiar they are 50/50 and only available through MX-1 Canada. The best $300 bucks yet spent for the Strom! Just about gave me the same confidence of my old RXCe400 on the loose stuff, including gravel. Very sticky on the asphalt, too, with no problems falling into turns or coming out. Actually, much more responsive than the BW's that were on it.

I am really looking forward to taking it off road on such a trip, so please keep me posted if you get something organized!

That loess soil up there is NOT doable when muddy.

Ok Bob, sounds great, I will take you up on that. I have a 990 with K60 tires. I am assuming its the 24highway C-Store/Subway I see on google maps? Coming from KC up 70 then 24 at Topeka.

Sorry if I hijacked this thread, couldn't figure out tap talk in the car a few hours back on that first post I did. It works ok for following hot topics but I sure can't figure it out otherwise.

Bob if you where there sorry, was late, 15min or so, missed you. My fault. Hung around for 30 or so then left for gravel roads just off 99 to McFarland.

Had a great time in Alma/Alta Vista/70 highway triangle for 3 hours. Little Ford and Cedar Bluff's creeks where just about my speed today, just a short runs of mud, so did them a few times. I think I did most roads in that triangle twice at least, mostly due to getting lost or finding them interesting. Heck of a lot of "worst" roads there just end in a damn fence or I wind up in a field.

Wayno -

Don't forget Rook's Road, Trego south of Atchison. Kickapoo has some nice roads south of there. Just post when you want to go, i'll see if I can make it. I did river road in the fall with Jim from Letko, it was really nice and really dry. Nothing fazes that guy, he just waits for me to finally show up and he's off!

Andy,
As it happens sometimes........... we just missed you.
We were all geared up, had 150 miles loaded in the GPS, and needed to get going to make it home in time so I could take my wife out for our 22nd wedding anniversary.

It was such a great day I figured you would find plenty of places to ride and enjoy.

Sorry we missed you. We'll have to give it a try again this summer.

Can't miss stuff like the 22d Anv without paying for that in spades forever! Next time I will leave earlier. It was a super nice day just putzing around the flint hills.

For those that don't have heated grips - I really recommend them with your hand guards, with a heavy adv jacket and pants (both lined, I got a old fieldsheer setup) and neck balaclava its really amazing you can ride at 70mph @ 32F and be just fine with normal gloves as long as you want to go. Prior to putting those on my temp limit was about 45F on the highway and I had to spend most of the time shaking my hands back to life and thinking about stopping. Really worth the $60.

I'm rocking $5 heated grips. No reason not to install them at that price IMHO. :)
