Minnesota May 30- June 2

Post by ajayhawkfan »

There is a Rally in MN that I plan on attending. http://www.bmwmocm.com/Rally.htm The area is a great area to ride. I'm planning on going (and have booked a room in the local motel). I have never been to a local rally except KC's for a day and was told is sucked compared to others.

I plan on leaving on Thursday May 30 and take gravel up there arriving Friday afternoon. Possibly do the GS ride on Saturday or we could explore on our own. Leave on Sunday and get home that night or possibly on Tuesday.

Anyone interested in going as well?

That sounds interesting. I've only been through MN once, and that was on I35 from Duluth south in February 10+ years ago. I have a small trip planned the week before, and I need to save some vacation time for the fall. And I need knobbier tires, or just ride the DRZ. I guess I have time to think about it.

Eddie's post made me think about a very preliminary route I had in mind for touring the Great Lakes. After spending the morning trying to find the link to that route and spending exactly 30 seconds rerouting the thing to include Money Creek, MN - If my vacation schedule works out, it would be fun to join you for the ride up to MN and maybe a day of farting around a bit before I continued North.

I spent 10 minutes building the thing a few months ago when I was taking a 'break' from work and I haven't researched all the cool places to go and do other than, like I said, building a route around the lakes. I figured there was always time for that later as other potential routes keep popping into my head. Maybe coinciding with the rally will give me an excuse to start working on it again.

Hmmmm.

Last year I went around Lake Michigan, about 3 years ago I did the loop around Superior. Both were great trips! Each trip took me a week. So much to see and do.

Well, after that little nugget and after doing some research over at ADV and the interwebs, the more inclined I am to think my preliminary tour was, was very ambitious. And I just don't want to commit that much vacation to one ride, or, skip out on stuff because I am running out of time trying to stick to some arbitrary time-line.

That being said, if you were going to tour up there again - where would you focus your ride? Superior? Upper Michigan area? I'm inclined towards Superior, just because I want to go to Canada. If you have some must-see's you remember from your ride, I'd be more than entertained to hear them.

Lake Superior and Michigan were fantastic and the best part they both share the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

If you do either lake trip stop and see the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum

and the Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie while a boat is going through.

If you decide on Michigan, I would recommend skipping Chicago all together and either go Milwaukee and cross on the high speed ferry or cross on the SS Badger at Manitowoc, WI. http://ssbadger.com/ I took the high speed abut I wish I took the Badger and stayed overnight in one of the state rooms. You need to call and ask about the SS Badger Bed and Breakfast.

Thanks for the update, Eddie. I'm really hoping my vacation works out, now! I'm a sucker for boat rides.
