Day after Thanksgiving

Post by Rusty Jug »

Well my wife says we are going to KC day after thanksgiving to shop, well I'm not going to shop, but plan to ride for a few hours if the weather is good.

Anybody going to ride that day, I need a guide and I prefer a dirt/gravel path! :)

I'll probably be riding that weekend, or on the holiday, depending on weather mostly. I'll post up on this thread a little closer to then.

I have to work until at least noon this Fri. My family will still be out of town, so I could be free to ride Fri afternoon and/or Sat.

The Fri & Sat forecasts are not bad--sunny and above 50 degrees.

Birdman (Larry) has a route he wants to lead in Eastern Anderson County, KS. (90 minutes S of the metro.) He knows a lot of the minimum maintenance and other interesting roads and sights down there. A highlight of the route is to stop for lunch at the Charlie Brown Grocery store in Mildred, KS where a couple of grandma's in the back run a deli. The sandwiches are supposed to be very good. Larry, I wonder if they might be closed this weekend on extended Thanksgiving holiday?

Larry, are you game to lead your route this Saturday? If Eddie is not hunting and not out of town this weekend (unlikely!), he knows the good stuff down that way.

We have options.

My only ride time is Friday, but I'm game to anything instead of shopping, I was going to stay home and put together a ride around Truman, but my wife says we are going up Thursday afternoon when the food joint closes at 2:00

So I plan to trailer my bike up. If it works out great, if not I'll find some fun!

We can do a ride after you get off work until dark! :) I would like to see some back country and a place to eat off the beaten path sweet! This foodie is all in!

If it works out?

The "back country" up this way is not as interesting as the back country where you live. Also, it can be 20+ miles of pavement just to get out of the metro--depends on where you leave from of course. I'm not trying to be a debbie downer, but want to make sure your expectations are appropriate. 8)

With the sunset at 5pm, and me getting off work 12:30 at earliest, there' s not a ton of time to ride.

Where in the metro will you be based? I might be able to plan something convenient based on your location.

OK guys, so if you had 4 hours total for the round-trip, and wanted to include a good food destination AND want an interesting ride? Anything?

Yes I am willing to do the ride on sat......will have to do a little more checking on the schedule to make sure sat. is open.
This week looks like the last pleasantly warm week to ride for a while so best make the best of it.
I will have to figure out how to find out if Charlie Browns grandma is making lunch on sat.
I plan/hoping to ride on Thursday either way. Ride route and destination is yet to be determined. So I am open to possibilitys if any one wants to ride on T day. T- day ride could possibly/likely end up being a black roads (secondary/county paved rds ride.) I have had one request for a ride like that so far.

I've got family at our house on Thursday so I would probably get in trouble if I left to go riding. Depending on how early my in-laws leave on Friday, I should be available most of the day. Saturday is wide open for me!

My base camp is anywhere, 40 miles out of town at a riding park. :)

I'm trailering to start point, any good riding parks?

I now have a T- dinner invite so my T- day ride will be short and close to home

There aren't any riding parks in kc.The two closest are Perry, Northwest of Lawrence and Deepwater which is a few miles south of Clinton on Hwy 13. In my opinion neither one of them is worth the drive.

You might be surprised at how far out of the city you have to get for gravel roads. I live on the very southeast part of greater kansas city and still have to drive 15 miles to get any gravel....progress! Even at that, I would consider the gravel pretty boring as they are all straight north/south and east/west. Although, on black Friday riding the interstate beats shopping!

Sat. Nov. 24 ride
I have learned that Charlie Brown Mkt. will not be open on sat. Nov. 24......but the Mapleton Cafe will be. If some of you want to do a ride I can make a new route that goes through Mapleton. I would like to start the ride in Garnett at the Airport. It is on the east side of town just off 169 ,easy to spot. Will try to do a route of 100 to 150 miles. I would like to start at 9 am and should finish no later than 3:30 - 4 pm. There is space to park a truck if you chose to haul your bike.
