Saturday 29th DS Ride near Leavenworth

I want to do a mostly gravel ride Saturday near Leavenworth (within 50miles or so to start). I am open on meetup times if people are available but currently I am thinking kick stands up in the early morning (8-9ish) and going for about half the day (maybe 3pm or so). I would like to focus on finding new roads nearby and just exploring the back roads with pavement for small intervals. I have a route that I am thinking of starting on but I am open to any input from other riders. This would just be a laid back ride to meet local DS riders and get to know more gravel roads. I figure we will lunch somewhere along the way. Maybe out around Perry, Easton, Atchison, or Lawrence depending on where we are when people get hungry.
Anyone have an interest?

There are some really scenic back roads from Leavenworth to Lawrence. What are you considering for roads? Lunch in Lawrence can be really varied from the very elegant 715 restaurant to fast (a misnomer) foods.

I'm very flexible all around. Most of the roads I know well enough are from Leavenworth towards Easton, McLouth, and Atchison. I just wanted to get out and ride with some guys. Not particular as to which roads. What did you have in mind for food and roads? I am thinking sit down food that is slightly better than "fast food". Nothing crazy just a good meal.
I think Buck Creek would for certain be in the loop if we head towards Lawrence
All around though I am just looking for a fun ride for those of us who are not lucky enough to go down to Arkansas this weekend

Sounds like fun. Just hit the gravel Monday and Tuesday but need to get more riding in before winter sets in. Count me in. Hopefully you get more takers.
Thanks, Klred

I am thinking that the plan will be to take the loop up the river road to White Cloud. I did some of it last night and it seems to be open after the flooding. It is a nice route that is fairly long. If we follow the route that I have I think that we should be in Lawrence for a late lunch. The only down side to the the route is not having done it all before there will be a fair amount of stopping to glance at the gps and confirm our location is where we were hoping
I figure kickstands up at 8 at a gas station in Leavenworth or alternatively we could meet for breakfast at some various places I know nearby.
So far Klred, you are the only one but we will see what happens. Your thoughts on the meetup plan/ route?

My $0.02 says there is no way you'll make it from Atchison to White Cloud and back down to Lawrence by lunch or even late lunch. I've done a similar loop a couple times and it just takes time---but you don't mind because it's so fun. All depends on your route of course. Those soft dirt/dust roads up in Doniphan County are unique and interesting....don't attempt if muddy! As dry as it's been, you'll have wakes of talcum soft dirt flowing off your tires. I want to get back up there to ride again.
Have fun!

I wondered if that was the case. Last night I got from Leavenworth to about 12 miles north of Atchison in about an hour so I was guaging off of that. It is a really nice road though. I was glad I had the garmin with me though. I never made a wrong turn but I kept thinking that I had and had to reference it. I figure Saturday we will just head north for three hours or so and where ever that gets us will be the spot we turn around and head the oposite direction. Unless we are close to the northern point on the route or just having so much fun we can't bear the thought of turning around just yet
Any thoughts on some good eats along the way?
Thanks for the input. I'll always take any advice I can get

Not really. Burger & ice cream joint in Wathena isn't bad, but Wathena is too early on your route. Eating joints are slim-pickin's up there. Let me know what you all discover!

Hmmm. Perhaps bringing some food along just in case would be prudent. Hopefully we will find some good stuff up North. I'll pass on whatever we discover along the way.

I will try to make it on sat. Is the gas station meet up still on? Where exactly? I know its not a very big town im sure ill find you guys. Ive done this route many times. If you want to go to white cloud plan on an all day ride. The roads should be good up there. The recent light rain should knock the dust down. I found some mmr's just, last week, west of LW that were pretty fun.

Let's plan on 8:45 meet up at the Casey's in Leavenworth at 20th and Spruce (which is also 92hwy). It is across the street from A grocery store called country mart. If you are going to show please let me know by Friday night or text me before you head out Saturday morning so I know how many bikes to be counting on. Kickstands are up and moving at 9am. Everyone should bring at least a couple snacks and water for the ride because it looks like food north at Atchison gets a bit sparse. I am hoping to stop and eat somewhere along the way but we will play it by ear. I have heard from a few people and it looks like there should be three bikes for certain and possibly up to six, for the moment.
I plan on moving at a nice pace most of the day. I don't haul ass down the gravel but I go steady most of the time.
If anyone has questions or concerns please call me or PM me and we will talk.

Nick, there's a pretty good burger place as you leave Atchsion heading north along the river road, ajayhawkfan and i stopped there a few weeks ago. As you leave downtown going north along the riverwalk it's will be on your left, forgot the name. Not sure on the current status of Burger Barn in Wathena, Troy?
No food in White Cloud I'm aware of.

I am thinking that Atchison will be a bit early for lunch and would probably opt for burger barn given the option. The route looked like it runs pretty near St. Joe, I am surprised there isn't more food on it. A good burger suits me just fine though, I love a good burger!
