Byrds is a fairly nice place with about 10 beds and several extra mattresses. covers, sheets and pillows are provided. Full kitchen with cookware, silverware and dishes provided. Water is drinkable, but the sulfphur smell will get your attention very quickly. We should either bring bottled water or some sort of filter for their water. 2 bathrooms with 3 shower between them.

We all sleep in a couple of big rooms so ear plugs would be a good idea if you are a light sleeper. We will figure out the menu a couple of days before the ride.

Troy it,s good to know you can come join us. I think you are #9, so yes there will be a bed for you. Still room for a couple of riders but don't drag your toes or you might not have a place.

David!!

Dont count me as a bed. I will have all my camping gear with so I will sleep out on the back deck or something. I am perfectly happy with this. That way you can have another rider in the house with us.

Key

Last year when I went to get the key, they had placed it under the front door mat but I will check again and see that we are in there around noon on Thur. Will see you there!

Bring some water jugs or buy some 1 gallon distilled jugs and save them. The gas station along the Mulberry R has a hydrant they will let you use to refill the jugs. The water at the place is questionable ... probably a shallow well next to the river, which gets plenty of agricultural runoff.

The Mulberry R is just out the back door. Bring a swim suit. Nice to just sit in the river after a long day riding. Bar of soap and a towel and you have a great place to clean up as well.

I won't be able to make it this year. Bumming over that, but oh well. Have a great time. I think I have made all of the AR trips since the KTMTalk DS ride. Great place to be.

Mike sorry to hear that you won't be able to make this year :( Maybe in the spring????

Mike is right the water maybe safe to drink, but I will be stopping and buying a few jugs of drinking water for sure! Byrds anit the 4 Seasons but it is dry, some what clean and best of all cheap. It is in a great location right on the river with good access to the trails and the gas station.

I really enjoyed sitting in the river after a long day in the saddle sipping a ceral malt beverage! Man that was good! We won't even talk about the local that stopped by to gaze at us city folk while we enjoyed the river.

Can wait to get there!

Now don't scare the new guys! We just need to think of this a cultural diversity training. :P

Without Sean, we probably have nobody connecting this trip with the KTMtalk group. Please feel free to invite Randy & Sandy--great people to ride with.

Hey, does someone have a route that sean made up I believe. Its the road that we took During the April Fools ride and it had all the jumps on it. We ended up going around a lake and a low water bridge at the bottom. We brought the same road back and I believe its off of hwy 215 down where Byrds campground is. Maybe not quite down that far though. I dont remember where we were heading though. Some of it is on the DVD that the Ohio guys made.

I do believe it was the same day KC went down and cracked the side case on his DRZ. We stopped a little later and Troy test rode the 510. Its the same route I think.

Are the jumps you're talking about the wide, freshly cut dirt section that we dubbed "the motocross track"? If that's it, both Troy and Mike should have that route. I believe the three of us rode up that trail again on our last day of riding.?

Nope, I know where that is. Thats right out of Cass on your way up the White rock mountain area. This is the road I think that leads up to the over look for the lake. The only lake you see in the DVD. You and I stopped in the parking lot at the bottom and you had a smoke right after we got off the road in question. Its pretty steep up there on the road. Dont make a misstake or your off the cliff!! It was just a 2 track road with a lot of Humps in it all the way down and up.

It was the route we used to get from Byrd's down to Clarksville. Horsehead Lake is about in the middle. It has that concrete low water crossing at the N end. You wrap around the N then W end of the lake to that parking lot/boat ramp area we rested at. Continue W and the road quickly turns to gravel then starts that winding steep incline with all the jumps. Every jump has a mud puddle on the up-hill side. Jump hard enough to clear them! 8)

It's in the middle of this route:

David Hodges, David Ogle, Larry Mcgillivary, and I are going to caravan down as a group. Leaving Lawrence between 5 and 6 am Thursday. We should be there before noon easy.

What does everyone want to do about food? I thought last year worked well doing group meals. Our foursome could get food and bring it if you want. I have no idea as to cost since we haven't looked for prices yet, but we would just divide the cost between the whole group.

Everyone will be on their own for water and what ever else they want to drink.

The first event we did--which was also the largest, Sean had 3 nights catered--and the food was fantastic. The problem with catering, though, is you have pressure to be back to the cabin by a deadline--or at least SOMEBODY needs to be there to let the caters drop the food off and collect payment.

David H, are you thinking what we did last year--pick up some large, frozen casserole type dishes at a Sams / Costco kind of place? That did work well and was hassle free, and I assume very cost effective. Frozen pizzas would work well, too.

The dining out options are all 20+ miles away.

The Oark Cafe is always a hit.....not that it is particularly good or anything. It's really more of a cult thing I guess! (About 36 miles away)
http://www.oarkgeneralstore.com/

Rivertowne BBQ in Ozark (about 20 miles) is good. Closes at 8pm Fri & Sat, closed Sun.
http://www.rivertownebbq.com/main.htm

The town of Altus has a few restaurant options and is about 23 miles away. Kelts, in Altus, is supposed to be good, as is Alligator Ray's. Fri & Sat night (28 & 29), we can catch the Cedar Creek Band at Alligator Ray's in Altus. Enjoy cajun-style food while listening to crappy reproductions of southern rock & country hits.
http://www.cedarcreekband.org/index.html

Just some options for the more adventurous.

It looks like we'll have a couple different groups riding (maybe more) -- some riding the hard-core ATV trails and some, on bigger bikes, enjoying the fantastic forest roads and twisty pavement. On rides past, we've stopped for lunch and gas at the station in Comb's. The lady that runs it is a hoot--does everything herself. Comb's is at the end of one very cool, very rugged jeep road (one of the route options) and a short distance north of the Mill Creek ATV trail system--very good stuff.

Hi all!

Dave,

I will be able to make it! Assume you still have a bed? I will be riding a KTM450exc. Plan to come down on Thursday. I live in Lenexa. I would like to share a ride with one or two others. I can drive or ride. I have a 2 bike trailer. Let me know if anyone is interested in ride sharing down Thurs. and back Sunday.
