Re: Rough Road Ahead
I wish I could find someone to go west of Lake Wilson and try this road out with me again. That "road" looks like good dualsport fun. The landscape/scenery looks interesting out there. Were there a lot of roads in that area to make the ride memorable? Darn it.....I wish I still had my KLR. Seeing L...

I spent 10 years sipping poison-ivy tea to build up an immunity to it. At first, I would only use 1/100th of a leaf in 6 ounces of boiling water. I could only do this once a week and only after a steroid shot. Now, I use the leaves as toilet paper. Sometimes I wrap bunches of the leaves together and...

Thanks for the memory, Kyle! Great photo, Jason! Glad you survived the encounter. :) Harm, you ride a KLR650, right? I can't speak to current mud conditions, but I will say that in my opinion, some have hyped the difficulty of that road. I will agree that it is probably the roughest road I've person...

Thanks for the info, KC. Thanks for bringing the bits home, Ian! At this point, it looks like I don't need them. Dean came over with some good quality bits, oil, and a tap. Dean is a human drill-press! He cut that sucker out clean and we tapped the 4 holes. I think if I get some longer bolts so I ca...

Tim, I reread my reply to your post, and it sounded like I was indicating your idea was not a "proven idea". Sorry! I didn't mean it that way. My first thought was vice-grips and a hammer, but keep in mind I had the full bolt head to turn with a socket wrench, and I twisted the bolt off. Beca...

I'm looking for proven ideas. Thanks for your ideas, Tim. Can I come borrow your magic lubricant? I don't need much. Would heat make the problem better or worse? Would I risk damaging my triple clamp with heat? Any recommendations on a good machine shop that could do the work of drilling and tapping...

How do I remove these stuck bolts? SOLVED
Gurus, I need your help with suggestions to remove these bolts. Even once removed, I have probably destroyed the threads in my bar clamp receiver. (I'm hoping the bolt material is softer than the receiver.) http://lh4.google.com/image/wolf.troy/RmLTprSfHvI/AAAAAAAAAYs/uI4NURrrJRc/DSC01787.JPG?imgmax...

Carl, somebody who could compare those 2 bikes better than about anybody is Mark "BigDog" Sampson. His website and ride reports are at http://www.bigdogadventures.com He owns and has ridden both machines on epic journeys through the Rockies , Mexico, and the TAT. If you read through his reports, you...

Need big bar clamp kit -- where?
I want to install "fat" bars on my DR350. I also want to raise the bars a little bit. The "perfect" solution seems to be the Tusk Universal Big Bar Clamp Kit, but it is back-ordered until late July! I'm trying to find another source or a comparable product. Any ideas? (Sorry the URL is so long which...

Granted, some of these guys are fantastic riders with skills beyond what I'll ever have. What so many of them seem to completely leave out of the equation is that they have zero control over the reactions of other people. The best rider in the world is SOL if a deer jumps in front of them at 120MPH....

Agreed! Last year, I was able to ride about every posted Lawrence ride led by either Hemphill or Greenhoot. Safiri (KC-based) even led his own loop around Lawrence--excellent. You are right--Dave knows the roads! I try to urge people that it's very much worth the haul or ride to Lawrence to make the...

If my bike was ridable, I'd go for a quick spin right now. Getting better sleep now--some thanks to family that is here helping take care of Rachel. Ankle still has 2 places that hurt--sometimes enough to bother me. I think I need new throttle cables. I also may need to scrap the expensive bar mount...

Well maybe we should get another group together and try and tackle it again!!!! You guys really should. I did complete that route all the way up to the "4 corners" at White Cloud and back, although the route that I've published that we attempted includes a bit of new stuff that I did not do the las...

Sorry that happened to you, man. Did they ride side by side right up against your back end then split around on either side?! That is extremely stupid and dangerous. Like you said, if you made the split decision to move out of the way--and you easily could have--one of those riders--and you--could h...

Another bike to consider is the Suzuki DR200. That's what I bought for my wife to learn on before selling it to Danny in Oklahoma for his wife to learn on. She rode it on Hemphill's Eureka Springs ride earlier this year. In my opinion, and I don't think people would argue, the DR200 is a lesser mach...

All, you guys have been a blessing--reading the encouragements, humor, and good wishes. :D Rachel is teaching me a lot! For one thing, I've learned I can actually function on just a few 30 minute to 1 hour naps spread throughout a 24 hour period! Yikes. You can find a link to latest photos at http:/...
